United Church of Christ

Thank you for checking us out.!  After viewing  our new website, you  are interested in learning more about our church, feel free to contact us by e-mail, Facebook,  or phone.  (see Contacts tab)

Our Vision Statement is, "We are called by God to be a Christian Church, seeking to live and share Jesus' vision of community and missions," and that's how we strive to be.  With regards to ministry and mission, the two most important aspects of being a church, we pride ourselves in both our hospitality; and our community outreach efforts. (see Outreach & Community tab

Our church building, God's House, is a beautiful facility that is full of character.  Our worship space offers special needs access to our comfortable cushioned pews, as well as a new visual aid system (see newspaper article in the Worship Tab).  Vandlen Hall, our large social hall, named after the Rev. Arlo Vandlen, who started the church in 1979, is used for all sorts of joyous occasions.  We have a sizable outdoor Memorial Garden.  Additionally we have a number of classrooms that are used during the week by a privately run nursery school program.

We cordially invite you to join us on Sunday morning at 9:30.  Here at First Congregational Church of Port St Lucie.  You will experience  meaningful worship, spiritually uplifting music provided by our music department and our chancel choir, and a gentle atmosphere for you to connect with our Lord and Savior.  We strive to reflect the love of Jesus Christ with all.  Childcare provided.

Our congregation here in Port St Lucie was started in 1979 under the guidance of its founder, the Rev. Arlo Vandlen.  The group of people who made up the church body began to form in December 1979 when the first service was held in the North Port Marina under the leadership of Rev. Arlo D. Vandlen, Founding Minister.  Services were conducted there regularly until November 30, 1980, when the group began to hold services in a partially completed residence at 2440 SE Sidonia Street, adjacent to the church property.  The house was built by the Vandlens on this land as a personal investment and the decision to rent it to the church at a relatively low rent was one indication of their dedication to the success of this church.

Throughout this period of gathering, and even before, the Vandlens carried on an intensive program of calling on people in the community ` those who had came to a service and many who had not.  Their out-going warmth and obvious faith in God and this church were powerful magnets in attracting and retaining to the group.

Membership began on January 20, 1980, when twenty-four people joined.  These became the nucleus of the charter membership group which was closed on Easter Sunday 1981 with 101 members.  Membership from the start has included persons who have this as their only church connection and others who retain their basic membership in a different church but join here as associate members and participate freely and equally in the work and offices of the church.

Rev. Vandlen has said "Many call the First Congregational Church  a 'miracle'  ` and it is indeed.  But it's a miracle that we expected.  God wanted the church here and He called Gerry and me to head up and lead in the task.  We believe and obeyed and let Him lead.  We have tried to humbly follow and we have done so, hopefully and expectantly.  It has been and is a joyous and victorious journey of faith and we praise Him and love Him to Whom we belong and Whom we love and serve"

We are part of the Southeast Region of the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ, a Christian denomination based in Cleveland, OH.

The UCC, which today includes more than 5,000 churches, has its historical roots from the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and the General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches.  These traditions merged into one in 1957 to become what we are today, the United Church of Christ.
